Key Facts:

#1 - Over 50% of maternal deaths occur in the postpartum period compared to 16.8% on the day of delivery

#2 - 18% of these maternal deaths occurred 1-6 days postpartum and 21% occurred 7-41 days postpartum

#3 - It is impossible to predict with any certainty which women will have a postpartum complication

#4 - All women need education on which signs and symptoms are emergencies and which require urgent care

#5 - RN's who provide discharge education are in a key role to educate women about the signs & symptoms of potential postpartum complications
